Two Indianapolis college students have stepped into the fast-paced world of politics as interns at the Indiana Statehouse during the 2025 legislative session, the office of State Sen. Cyndi Carrasco (R-Indianapolis) recently shared. Esther Blake, a resourceful Indiana University Indianapolis sophomore, and Andy Gibson, a keen junior at the same university, are imbuing their academic pursuits with real-life governmental experience.

Their internship with the Indiana Senate Majority Caucus requires them to not just to track and analyze legislative data, but also provide constituent services and support for committee hearings and meetings. This hands-on approach to understanding political inner workings is invaluable and aptly timed in a budget year, as emphasized by State Sen. Carrasco in a statement captured by the official Senate Republicans’ website.

Esther Blake, whose educational roots reach back to the Classical Studies of Indianapolis, brings a focus on human resource management to the legislative environment. Indiana Senate involvement stands to enhance her comprehension of policy implications on human capital. As Blake herself acknowledged in an interview with the Indiana Senate Republicans, being able to have firsthand experience in local government is a privilege she wholeheartedly embraces for the learning opportunity.

Gibson, on the other hand, blends his studies in law and global international studies with the internship's practical experiences. Each week, he eagerly absorbs new facets of the legislative system, a journey of insight and professional growth he appreciates deeply. "Working for the Indiana Senate has been a great experience," Gibson told the Indiana Senate Republicans. "I like that each week I gain new insight into the legislative system and professional experience."

The legislative internship will continue through the session, which is set to wrap up by April 29.
