An Indianapolis pursuit reached harrowing speeds yesterday night as a man, wanted for a serious violent felony, led police on a chase with an infant in the vehicle. According to a statement provided by WTHR, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) began following the subject after an officer, fueling up on West 86th Street and Ditch Road, recognized and attempted to pull over the male who was known to be wanted for possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
The driver refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that lasted about 15-20 minutes and extended into Carmel where the vehicle lost control and crashed into a light pole at a roundabout on East 116th Street and South Rangeline Road, as reported by WTHR. The man attempted to flee on foot but was detained shortly thereafter. It was later disclosed that an infant was inside the car during the chase and subsequent crash. The child was transported to an hospital as a precaution but was not believed to have been injured.
Further details provided by FOX59 reveal that during the chase, the suspect's vehicle reached speeds of 80 to 90 mph. Despite the high-risk scenario, Capt. Rob Rider of the IMPD explained that decisions to continue a pursuit are based on a balance of "government interest versus the risk to the public." Given the suspect's status as a serious violent felon, Rider expressed that there was a "high interest" in apprehending the suspect, implying a greater tolerance for pursuit risks in these situations.
The chase and subsequent apprehension involved not just the IMPD but also the Carmel police. The infant, deemed unharmed, was taken to a local hospital out of an abundance of caution, FOX59 reported. Incidents like these underscore the complex decisions law enforcement must make in high-pressure situations, balancing the immediacy of capture with the overarching concern for public safety.
In a separate account, WISH-TV noted that the chase initiated just after 7:50 p.m. and ended with the crash occurring before 8:15 p.m. The SUV's collision took place when the driver navigated the roundabout too quickly, resulting in a crash that brought the high-speed pursuit to an end. As law enforcement confronts such violent subjects, Rider affirmed that the IMPD will take more risks, within reason, to ensure safety within the community.
