As the retail landscape continues to shift, Kohl's Corporation has proceeded to shutter 27 of its underperforming stores nationwide, including two prominent locations in the suburbs of Chicago. These closures, part of a company-wide strategy to streamline operations and focus on long-term growth, took effect this weekend, as confirmed by NBC Chicago.
The two local stores facing closure were located in Plainfield at 11860 S. Route 59 and West Dundee at 3000 Spring Hill Ring Rd, as per WGN-TV. These stores officially ceased operation on March 29 and March 28, respectively. With this move to close underperforming stores, Kohl's aims to rid itself of excess retail square footage and maintain a stronger presence in more profitable markets, despite the need to lay off employees in the process.
Kohl's, which operates over 1,150 stores nationwide, has begun to provide assistance to the affected employees. According to statements obtained by NBC Chicago, the company has offered "a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl's" to the displaced workers. The company explained that these closures are part of a broader effort "to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."
