Commuters in Lafourche Parish will need to adjust their travel plans as the LA 655 Lockport Old Swing Bridge, also known as the Rita Bridge, is now closed for an indefinite period. According to the official Department of Transportation and Development announcement, which cites roadwork as the reason for the closure, both the northbound and southbound lanes of the bridge were shut down starting on Thursday.
The bridge connects East Main Street and Main Street, and its closure is expected to cause significant disruption. The ongoing roadwork doesn't have a specific end date yet, but detour routes have been set up to help redirect traffic around the closed bridge, as reported by the Department of Transportation and Development.
Northbound drivers will be redirected to the LA 654 (Champagne/Harrelson) bridge, while southbound travelers are advised to use the LA 3220 (New Lockport Swing Bridge). Officials are encouraging drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time to navigate the detours, as per the Department of Transportation and Development.
