A Mexican national, identified as Juan Alexis Castanon-Chavez, 27, faced a federal court in Salt Lake City today concerning charges of drug trafficking and violation of U.S. immigration law. Castanon-Chavez, a Las Vegas resident, was indicted on Wednesday, following a complaint initially filed earlier that month, on March 3. According to U.S. Department of Justice, he made his first court appearance on the indictment yesterday, ahead of a scheduled jury trial on May 16.

Local agents of the Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force (WMDTF) began investigating Castanon-Chavez, who is believed to have connections with drug trafficking operations funneling significant quantities of narcotics into the United States. On March 2, agents executed a controlled delivery of narcotics with Castanon-Chavez delivering to an informant. He was later apprehended after a traffic stop where a K9 unit indicated the presence of drugs. Inside the vehicle, agents seized approximately 7,930 grams of field-tested positive methamphetamine.

Charged with possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and illegal re-entry of a previously removed alien, Castanon-Chavez's legal proceedings began to unfold in the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse. Law enforcement efforts by entities such as the FBI and the Davis Metro Narcotic Strike Force highlight an ongoing crackdown on illegal drug distribution networks and immigration offenses.
