
A violent encounter has left a man hospitalized and another under arrest in Seattle. On Sunday afternoon, police responded to a call on the 900 block of Union Street, where they discovered a 34-year-old man with a significant neck wound, as reported by KIRO 7. The injury was inflicted by a hatchet, leading to what authorities have characterized as a serious laceration.
The suspect, a 50-year-old man, was apprehended by police inside his apartment located on the 10th floor. Harborview Medical Center received the victim, and he was admitted with life-threatening injuries, according to officials. KING 5 described the weapon used in the assault as a hatchet about 12 inches in length with a seven-inch blade, hiding under the suspect's mattress in the living room.
Following the arrest, a search warrant was executed where the aforementioned hatchet, which police officers located under a mattress in his living room – a space typically associated with hospitality, not hidden weapons. The 50-year-old was booked into King County Jail shortly after on investigation of first-degree assault as per the details offered by The Seattle Times.
As of Sunday night, a Harborview spokesperson was not able to provide an update on the victim's condition, leaving a community to grapple with the abrupt violence that shattered the calm of an otherwise typical Sunday. The hatchet, an ordinary tool turned weapon, lay quietly under the mattress, a chilling reminder of the incident's brutality.
