The Manatee County Sheriff's Office has issued an urgent warning to the community via social media, cautioning that scammers are actively targeting the families of the incarcerated or those who have recently received citations. These unscrupulous individuals are purporting to assist in the probation process, notably in setting up electronic monitoring, and are even claiming individuals could be released from jail in exchange for payment – notably, a demand for $1,300 in Bitcoin was made to one unsuspecting family member. Such actions are the hallmark of fraudsters, exploiting the vulnerable in their moments of need and confusion.
Concern rises as these scammers demonstrate a brazen approach, calling families directly and feigning authority as deputies or probation officers, and while it's clear that the true process involving probation or court fines bears no resemblance to these phone requests, still the calls keep coming, threats keep being made, and the plea for Bitcoin or gift cards is unfailingly consistent. The scam is particularly insidious because it trades on the authorities’ credibility – a sheriff's badge is morphed into a conman's prop – when in reality no legitimate entity would ever solicit such payments over the phone or through such untraceable means as cryptocurrency or gift cards.
On their official Facebook page, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office offers straightforward advice to those who may be targeted by such scams: promptly hang up, keep your personal information private, and report the scam to law enforcement.
