Maricopa County resident Edmon Yohannes, born in March 1985, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, followed by lifetime probation. Yohannes was convicted after being caught in an undercover operation called "Operation Tangled Web," which targeted individuals attempting to engage in illegal activity with minors, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Yohannes first contacted an undercover detective on Grindr, believing he was speaking with a father. The conversation later moved to Kik, where Yohannes inquired about the ages of the detective’s children and expressed an interest in meeting them. He allegedly offered stuffed animals for a 5-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl.
Yohannes was arrested after sending pictures of stuffed animals he intended to trade and arriving at a pre-arranged meeting, where law enforcement was present. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized the gravity of his intent, stating, "Thank heaven this was an undercover detective rather than two actual children because Yohannes' actions show he was ready and willing to victimize them." Convicted of two counts of Child Sex Trafficking and two counts of Attempt to Commit Sexual Conduct with a Minor—both classified as Dangerous Crimes Against Children—Yohannes faced a stern sentence. As Mitchell told reporters, "this is one child predator who will be spending a long time in prison," as mentioned by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
