Residents in Miami-Dade County have fallen victim to scalpers who hoard free DMV appointments and sell them for cash. The Tax Collector’s Office recently exposed a network of scalpers, with Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez stating, "We know who they are and how they operate. We will not accept any appointment obtained through system abuse," according to Community Newspapers. This effort aims to ensure locals can access services without paying extra fees. Fernandez added, "Our office is committed to ensuring that all residents have fair and equal access to services without interference from those seeking to exploit the system."
To prevent exploitation, the Tax Collector’s Office has updated its website to make it easier for residents to directly book appointments, eliminating the need for third-party sellers. NBC Miami reported that the office is increasing staffing and improving technology to address the illegal sale of appointments.
Despite these efforts, the issue continues. Fernandez urged residents to avoid paying for what should be a free service. Fernandez is collaborating with local law enforcement to tackle this illegal activity and restore order to the DMV system.
