Deputy Damian Colon, after two decades of service, was honored during his retirement ceremony at the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office today. His career included work in various units, such as Crime and Suppression and Illegal Dumping. According to WSVN, Colon expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery, saying, "I appreciate everybody that's been behind me throughout this road. It's been a long road and I will continue doing what I need to get better."
In 2022, Deputy Colon became the victim of a shooting by his ex-girlfriend, which almost cost him his life, as reported by NBC Miami.
A fellow deputy reflected on the traumatic experience, saying, "That phone call that day was one no supervisor ever wants to get," as reported by WSVN. Despite the long road to recovery, Colon’s strength and resilience have been admired by many.
The ceremony highlighted not only his work achievements but also his incredible survival. In an WSVN interview, his brother, Sergeant David Colon, shared, "II don’t think I need to remind anyone how close Damian was to death. I think it’s as close as anyone can get and he pulled through. He never gave up. And we give all the gratitude to all the nurses and the teams of medical care people that were there but I think God works through them."
The ceremony concluded with colleagues supporting him as he signed off for the last time. The National Domestic Hotline is available 24/7 at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), along with other local resources.
Meanwhile, Colon’s ex-girlfriend remains in custody, facing charges including stalking and attempted first-degree murder. Her actions have had a lasting impact, but Deputy Colon's story of survival continues to inspire courage and community.
