A tragic hit-and-run incident in National City last Saturday claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman, who was found unresponsive in the roadway. The National City Police Department reported that officers had responded to the 1600 block of East Plaza Boulevard around 2:12 AM after receiving a report of a person lying in the street. Despite immediate CPR efforts by officers, firefighters, and paramedics, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation, which is still underway, has led to the arrest of 27-year-old Jamal Dekwon Lee. Officers were directed to the 600 block of E. 18th Street by a witness, where they found Lee's vehicle with damage consistent with a pedestrian collision. Upon contacting Lee at his residence, he was determined to be the driver at the time of the collision and was subsequently taken into custody. Lee is facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing death or great bodily injury, and felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, as confirmed by the National City Police Department.
The department is keeping the victim's identity confidential for now, pending notification from the next of kin. However, the incident has prompted the National City Police Department to request any information connected to the case from the public, urging individuals to contact their Investigations Division or contact San Diego Crime Stoppers for those wishing to remain anonymous.
