On an otherwise ordinary evening in December last year, a Nebraska man's descent into tragedy marked its final, violent chapter inside a Lafayette laundromat. FOX59 reports that on December 5, 2024, 73-year-old Louis McGlothlin opened fire at the Lafayette Laundry, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Keith Ford and wounding others before turning the gun on himself.
Initial 911 calls were made around 7:40 p.m., soon followed by reports of gunfire, as documented by WTHR. Tragically, McGlothlin and Ford were later pronounced dead, throwing both a community and the pressing issue of mental health care into the national conversation.
Investigators determined that McGlothlin had no personal connection to any of his victims, as revealed by WISH-TV. "Based on the recovered videos, it is clear that Louis had been planning the attack for an extended period, as some of the footage appeared to be several years old," police said. McGlothlin's history in Lafayette stretched back to his childhood, though he only recognized the area of South Street and Earl Avenue and the nearby businesses, which included the laundromat he targeted.
It appears, as police shed light on McGlothlin's backstory, his battles with mental illness had been long and fraught with pronounced delusions about individuals in Lafayette controlling his mind. The released YouTube video with police audio from the incident gives a chilling insight into the unfolding tragedy, as it included not only footage from the event but also disturbing 911 calls, which helped piece together the narrative of that fateful night.
