This initiative has been made possible through the generous Ambassador Gift from Ángeles Moreno Bau, Spain's envoy to the U.S., according to the City of New Orleans announcement.
These original tiles were a token from the Spanish government, dating back to the 1950s, and they have served as markers for the bygone Spanish street names in the Vieux Carre. In a move that shows international collaboration and cultural preservation, the Spanish tile manufacturer ADEX is producing the replacement tiles, while the Spanish Consulate will oversee liaison duties between ADEX and the Vieux Carré Commission, as reported by the City of New Orleans.
Applicants aiming to refresh their worn-out pieces of heritage won't face any fees for permits. However, they are required to provide key documentation when applying, which includes photographs of the damaged tiles and, if applicable, a letter from their condo association board. This process will ensure that the authentic character of the French Quarter's streets is maintained, preserving both history and community identity, as per the City of New Orleans.
The Vieux Carré Commission is set to handle all documentation and data for the restoration efforts, albeit without direct engagement with the tile producers.
