Heads up, New Orleans drivers, there are some changes on the horizon for the city's school zones. Starting Monday, March 24, the New Orleans Department of Public Works will activate additional school zone beacons, the latest effort to bolster safety for students and motorists alike. The update arrives courtesy of a recent city ordinance tailored to bring local practices in line with state laws.
The unanimous adoption of Ordinance Calendar No. 35,005 by the City Council on March 13, at the behest of Councilmember Joe Giarrusso and the Administration, was a critical step in this process. As reported by NOLA.gov, Mayor LaToya Cantrell signed the ordinance, which includes some notable adjustments to connectivity between signage schedules and actual school days as well as signage placement and beacon operation requirements.
Under the new legislation, school zone speed limits will take on a more nuanced timing, pegged to an hour before and after the start and conclusion of a school's day. The beacons, while not in place at every school zone location, will enforce violations only where they are operational. This targeted approach ensures that enforcement is concentrated during periods when children are most likely to be traversing these areas.
The DPW teams have been hard at work making sure all systems are go in accord with Act No. 103 from the 2024 Regular Session. The law spells out that school zone cameras are active only at prescribed times, prompting a citywide update of the related technology and signage. These amendments, as per the city's announcement, reflect a dedication to the protection of young students and the principles of lawful driving—binding technology, policy, and community safety in a collective embrace.
