A 58-year-old woman, Toni-Lynn Marie Trabb, was found dead by cleaning staff at a Best Western hotel in Port St. Lucie Monday morning. Investigators have named 51-year-old Carlos Tito Caban, a registered sex offender, as the suspect in this homicide, with details surfacing that reveal a series of events leading up to his arrest, according to CBS12 News.
According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, Caban was apprehended in Tifton, Georgia, while driving the victim's white Toyota Corolla. The credit card used to rent the hotel room, belonged to the victim but was used by a man later identified as Caban. Caban and Trabb had apparently been dating on and off for a couple of months before her untimely death. Further complicating matters, when police pulled over Caban, he was accompanied by another unidentified woman he met in Orlando who agreed to travel with him to New York, "thus the adventure began," said Sheriff's spokesperson Lt. Andrew Bolonka, in a statement obtained by Treasure Coast Newspapers.
With Caban facing charges related to violations of his sex offender registration, the case is further complicated by his previous history. Caban had been convicted in January 2021 for sexual battery with aggravating circumstances and was released from prison in 2023, reported Treasure Coast Newspapers. Detectives from St. Lucie County are now coordinating with Georgia authorities as they work to piece together the events that led to Trabb's death.
CBS12 News reported that the investigation continues to be active and ongoing, with authorities diligently following up on leads. Lt. Bolonka stated, "We have detectives en route to Georgia to meet with authorities and further the investigation." In the meantime, local law enforcement extended their condolences to the family of Trabb as they remember her during the unfolding of these events.
