The National Weather Service in Knoxville has issued a forecast predicting a tumultuous week ahead for residents across southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia. According to the latest reports, there's a 60 percent chance of showers later today, with potential thunderstorms that could bring between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain. The temperatures are expected to reach a high near 77 degrees, with a few gusts of wind hitting as much as 20 mph.

Tonight, the odds of rain and thunderstorms remain high, particularly after 4 am, with the weather transitioning from partly cloudy to overcast. Residents can expect a low around 60 degrees and a calm southwest wind. The NWS also cautions that new rainfall amounts could range between a quarter and half an inch. The threat of hazardous weather escalates with storms anticipated to move across the region late tonight into Monday morning, some of which "could be strong to severe, with the potential for damaging winds and large hail and a low chance of tornadoes," as reported by the NWS.

Monday will likely bear witness to continual showers and the possibility of thunderstorms, with an unwavering chance of precipitation at 100%. New rainfall could accumulate between three-quarters and one inch. In contrast, Monday night should offer a slight respite from the storms, with only a 10 percent chance of thunderstorms before 8 pm and a drop in temperature to around 43 degrees.

Looking ahead to midweek, winds will pick up on Wednesday, with expected speeds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. Temperatures are projected to peak at a comfortable 81 degrees under partly sunny skies. This precedes another bout of potential showers on Wednesday night, carrying a cooler 67-degree low.

The latter end of the week continues the trend with a 40 percent chance of showers both Thursday and Thursday night. Temperatures during the day will reach highs nearing the mid-80s, with no sign of significant cooling during the evenings. By Friday, the likelihood of experiencing showers and possible thunderstorms jumps to 60 percent, maintaining a mostly cloudy outlook for the weekend ahead. "Spotter activation may be needed tonight and Monday," the NWS mentions.
