
Following a heartrending incident in Riverdale, Ricardo Trujillo Rojel has appeared in court, facing charges of aggravated murder and arson in connection with the death of 23-year-old Mayra Catalan-Dimas, according to KSLTV. This case, which led to an AMBER Alert, began unfolding on March 24 when police found Catalan-Dimas inside her burning trailer home in Riverdale with significant burn marks and a fatal neck wound.
Authorities, after receiving reports from witnesses who had last seen the young mother and her two children, ages 2 and 3, with the suspect earlier in the day, issued an AMBER Alert when neither Rojel nor the children could be located, as reported by KUTV, eventually, the suspect's vehicle was spotted by the public in Springville Canyon leading to his apprehension with children in tow after some initial resistance to the arrest.
Rojel's truck was identified via license plate readers, and a tip from the public led to his arrest in Hobble Creek Canyon, as the Utah County Sheriff's Sergeant Ray Ormond elaborated in a discussion with KUTV. During a jailhouse interview, Rojel allegedly confessed to physically assaulting and ultimately taking the life of Catalan-Dimas following an argument, after killing her, he set fire to the residence and fled with their children, he has since been charged with first-degree felony aggravated murder and aggravated arson, along with a second-degree felony obstruction of justice charge.
The investigation resulted in the sobering discovery that Mayra Catalan-Dimas was deceased upon rescue operations, with her passing grievingly affirmed by Riverdale Police Chief Casey Warren who stated, "She was unfortunately found to be deceased," as noted by KSLTV, as the community wades through the emotional aftermath, a fundraiser has been started to help with funeral expenses for Catalan-Dimas, emphasizing a void her untimely death has cast upon those she leaves behind.
Trujillo Rojel has a prior history of domestic violence involving Catalan-Dimas and was arrested on related charges as recently as January, adding a layer of tragic premonition to the present case, furthermore, the children were initially placed under the care of Child Protective Services, but they have now been given to the custody of family members.
