Big infrastructural developments are underway on Treasure Island, with the Hillcrest Road Improvement project breaking ground in a collaborative effort between the San Francisco Transportation Authority and other entities. As reported by Housing and Community Development, the project aims to transform Hillcrest Road into a one-way dual-lane thoroughfare with an on-road bike lane; this lane is slated for a future upgrade into a pathway accommodating both pedestrians and cyclists.
The makeover, which benefits from a $30 million injection via HCD's Infill Infrastructure Grant program, promises more than just a new roadway; it also includes retaining walls receding into the landscape, guardrails, and improved lighting to enhance safety for all path users while moving forward, the project supports the construction of over 800 homes as part of the expansive Treasure Island Master Plan which plans to sprout a fresh neighborhood from over 400 acres of the island's ground with an emphasis on affordable housing for those currently without a home on the island along with sustainable infrastructure to support the fledgling community.
As unveiled by HCD, the Treasure Island Master Plan is not just about laying down roads and erecting buildings. It's a pledge to cultivate a community complete with transportation links and essential amenities like parks, stores, and restaurants.
