During the recent budget hearings that carried into their second day, State Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) shared his thoughts on the proceedings, with a particular focus on the funding priorities for families and education. According to a release on Indiana Senate Democrats' official website, Niezgodski highlighted the Office of Health and Human Services' budget, approving of initiatives such as fully funding families on the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) and the proposed creation of a local child care assistance fund.
"I'm pleased to see key priorities in the Office of Health and Human Services' budget, including fully funding families on the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) and creating a local child care assistance fund," Niezgodski stated. He expressed concern that the House-passed budget failed to address the CCDF waitlist, only maintaining funding for families already using the program. "We will work to ensure the Senate budget fully addresses this need so more Hoosier families can access affordable child care," he emphasized. Despite fighting for Medicaid waitlists for home and community-based services to be addressed, such concerns remain unaddressed under both the Governor's and House-passed budgets, as noted by Indiana Senate Democrats.
Attention also turned to issues within the Office of Education. Niezgodski praised Indiana’s progress in national rankings for reading and math, as indicated during the hearing. Nonetheless, Niezgodski identified critical areas that require more attention, with teacher retention and compensation standing out as prominent examples. He emphasized that although the agency proposed to address issues regarding teacher pay, it did not quite hit the mark. "Our teachers and educators play a vital role in the lives of Hoosier children. Without them, students would lack fundamental reading and writing skills. We must start showing them the appreciation they deserve," Niezgodski told Indiana Senate Democrats.
As the Senate Appropriations Committee's work continues, Niezgodski remains dedicated to a budget that serves Hoosiers effectively. In meetings with members of the Governor's cabinet and several agencies, he underscored his commitment to maximizing the state's substantial budget in ways that prioritize Hoosier lives. "After hearing from members of the Governor’s cabinet and several agencies today, I look forward to continued discussions with them to ensure we maximize the more than $46 billion biennium budget and keep Hoosier lives at the forefront," Niezgodski declared, as per the Indiana Senate Democrats.
