Memphis has once again found itself grappling with the aftermath of violence following a shootout outside an iconic local nightclub. The incident occurred at Lucille's Blues and Diner, a spot steeped in history and tradition within the Westwood community. According to Action News 5, police were summoned to the venue at around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, where they discovered evidence of a confrontation that had escalated beyond the club's walls.
Witness statements and the preliminary investigation suggest that an altercation inside the club precipitated the violence. After club security intervened and removed the individuals involved, the dispute flowed into the parking lot. The chaos resulted in two people sustaining gunshot wounds before being rushed to the hospital in non-critical condition. A third individual, also injured during the incident, was taken to the hospital but had not been shot. As detailed by Local Memphis, multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene, indicating that several parties discharged firearms in the fray.
The owner of Lucille's Blues and Diner, Stayce Richards, expressed her dismay at the events, vowing not to let the violent actions of a few undermine the legacy of her establishment. "It's mind-blowing because people just want to enjoy themselves," Richards told WREG. She detailed her immediate response to the initial fight, claiming that once those involved were escorted to their vehicles, they retrieved guns and opened fire. Richards has faced challenges with security in the past, with an incident in December leading to the arrest of two guards; she now emphasizes that her current guards are all licensed and verified.
The Memphis Police Department, which has responded to calls at this location before, is actively investigating the incident. They are currently seeking a black Chevy Suburban believed to be related to the crime. While no arrests have been made, Richards insists on changes to prevent such happenings again, including raising the patron age limit. "The 35 and older have something to lose. These young folks don't have nothing to lose," Richards stated in an interview obtained by WREG.
