A Southern Utah man, Aaron Kern, aged 27, faced a judge on charges of sex trafficking, as documented in a federal indictment. The indictment, issued on March 11, by a federal grand jury, was followed by Kern's initial court appearance where U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Kohler in St. George ordered his detention.
While Kern was incarcerated for an unrelated state offense, it is alleged that between November 2023 and December 2024, he forcibly recruited and threatened a victim to perform commercial sex acts. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Kern coerced the victim into handing over most of the proceeds from these acts, violently imposing his will with statements such as “obviously the only thing that is going to work is me breaking your face when you don’t want to listen.”
The investigation, led by the Washington County Drug/Gang Task Force, uncovered more than just the threats. Online prostitution advertisements that were dictated and ordered by Kern to be placed by the victim were found. In a chilling revelation, authorities also discovered in Kern's jail cell a handwritten contract he intended for the victim to sign, along with notes and journal entries detailing his manipulative tactics to "break the victim down."
