In St. Petersburg, local officers are engaging with young residents through the Officer Friendly Book Club initiative. Community Service Officers, including Officer Samantha Reeder, are promoting literacy by reading to preschoolers on a regular basis. The St. Petersburg Police Department shared this effort on their social media for National Read Across America Day, noting that officers like Reeder visit classrooms once a month to read to the children.
This initiative to promote early literacy is part of a partnership between the St. Petersburg Police and the Early Learning Coalition of Pinellas County, an organization focused on advancing literacy. One activity in the program involves uniformed officers reading in classrooms, helping to establish a connection between law enforcement and the community. In addition to supporting literacy, the program also allows officers to engage in educational spaces, fostering a positive association between law enforcement and support within the community.
In celebration of National Read Across America Day, the St. Petersburg Police Department shared on social media their efforts to connect policing and education. The post, which included the message "Reading is fundamental!" highlighted the department's initiatives. Officer Reeder was featured in the post, representing the group of officers who regularly engage with young residents as part of the department's community-focused efforts.
