In a move that's become an annual tradition, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is working to ensure that local high school seniors can safely revel in their Grad Night festivities. As stated in a recent social media post, members of their K-9 Division teamed up with the Veterans Affairs Police to meticulously sniff through luggage at several high schools prior to the students' anticipated trip to Disney.
This precautionary measure has been framed as a part of the efforts to maintain a "safe and drug free experience" for the students. In a Facebook post, the Sheriff's Office expressed their intent to not only ensure safety but to actively encourage the seniors to "Make good choices, represent St. Tammany well, and most importantly…have fun!"
The K-9 units, renowned for their keen sense of smell, are said to enjoy the work they do, according to the Sheriff's Office's post. The earnest dedication of these dogs, alongside their handlers, provides a keen line of defense in the community's efforts to uphold secure environments for important events like these. The post goes a step further to humanize the engaging activities that these dogs partake in, noting, "But for our K-9s, this isn’t just another night...it’s them doing what they love to do."
