The aftermath of a powerful storm system that swept through Indiana has left a trail of destruction and a somber toll, with two fatalities reported in northern Indiana. Crews are set to survey the damage in multiple counties, including Bartholomew and Brown, following Sunday's severe weather. WTHR relayed the announcement that National Weather Service personnel will be investigating the affected areas on Monday.
Among the incidents, a semi-trailer was one of at least four to be toppled by the storm's high winds, as confirmed by the National Weather Service. Tragically, in Elkhart County, such winds claimed a life by overturning an Amish buggy near State Road 13 and County Road 43, close to Millersburg, at around 5 p.m. This information comes from a report by WIBC, detailing the storm's deadly force. The same report mentioned an additional injury resulting from the severe weather event.
As the system cut across the Midwest, it was not restricted to Indiana alone. A broader look by FOX59 revealed 367 wind damage incidents, 198 hail reports and three tornadoes confirmed thus far in Missouri, Michigan, and Tennessee. It's possible that additional tornadoes will be verified near Bartholomew, Brown, and Monroe counties, as teams from the National Weather Service conduct their assessments.
As per FOX59, in Brown County, the local state park bore witness to the storm's ferocity, with "numerous tree tops" severely cut and trees felled at the park's west gate. A report from the same county described a trampoline hurled over a hundred yards by the wind, which was clocked at a gust of 68 mph. Elsewhere, Monroe and Owen counties suffered through significant hail, including a one-inch variety in Spencer and slightly smaller hailstones near Ellettsville. Unfortunately, another report recounted an individual being trapped after a tree collapsed into a mobile home, causing minor injury.
