Following a tense standoff in Salt Lake City that began yesterday morning, SWAT team members and crisis negotiators were able to take a suspect into custody safely without incident. The confrontation started when a 911 call reported that 40-year-old Colin Smith had brandished a gun at his roommate, according to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.
The roommate managed to leave the home quickly and contacted law enforcement. Upon arrival, Smith did not comply with officers' requests to come outside, which led to additional support being dispatched to the scene, including the SLCPD Crisis Negotiation Team and the SLCPD SWAT Team. The negotiations extended throughout the day until Smith eventually stepped outside to converse with SWAT officers and surrendered peacefully. "Negotiators contacted Smith and eventually he stepped outside the home where he spoke with SWAT officers and surrendered," the Salt Lake City Police Department stated.
A subsequent search of the premises by detectives turned up multiple firearms. Smith is now expected to be booked into jail with charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief looming over him. It is important to note that charges are merely allegations at this stage, and Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
