Tampa homeowners who've been left to pick up the pieces after hurricanes Helene and Milton can now look forward to some financial relief. The City of Tampa is rolling out a new aid program with a total of $3.2 million set to be distributed to those residents who call the city their primary domain and meet income requirements. Starting from Monday, eligible parties can begin the process by filling out a pre-application online.
The aid comes from the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) Funds, and it's split into three distinct types: Insurance Deductible Assistance, Mortgage Assistance, and Cost of Repair Assistance. Homeowners might just to quickly act to prepare the necessary paperwork, which includes income documentation and a government-issued photo identification for all adult household members. Families and individuals could be eligible for up to $20,000, though that's the cap per household no matter how many types of assistance they apply for.
"Rebuilding has been front and center of my agenda since our city was hit by these back to back storms last year," Mayor Jane Castor stated, signaling a strong commitment to recovery. "This has the potential to affect hundreds of families as they get back on their feet and prepare for our next hurricane season," she added in a statement obtained by Tampa.gov.
Qualifying for this assistance requires homeowners to reside within Tampa city limits and earn up to 140 percent of the Area Median Income—about $133,700 for a family of four. It's an opportunity to seek some stability after months of upheaval. "Homeowners hit hard by hurricanes have been painfully rebuilding their lives and their homes for months on end," expressed Tampa Councilman Luis Viera. "It is our hope that this recovery assistance can help these struggling residents in the journey to get settled into their homes and find some sense of normalcy," he further told Tampa.gov.
