In a display of bipartisan recognition, Dr. Crystal Reynolds, a notable figure in Terre Haute for her commitment to African American history and community mental health, was honored on the Senate floor by State Sen. Greg Goode. The honor, detailed in Senate Resolution 38, was in respect to Dr. Reynolds's extensive advocacy and scholarly work in the Wabash Valley. As an educator, she has dedicated her career to pioneering the study of African American history and facilitating a deeper understanding of local heritage, as reported by Indiana Senate Republicans.
Dr. Reynolds's contributions go beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community. Her "Hidden History Tours" have educated school-aged children about the significant, yet often untold, contributions of people of color in Vigo County. It's this dedication to learning and service that earned her the accolades from lawmakers like Goode. "She has led groundbreaking research on the impacts of people of color in Vigo County, and I have personally learned a great deal of important local history through her writing and lectures," Goode stated in homage to Dr. Reynolds's efforts, as per Indiana Senate Republicans.
Acknowledgment of her contributions wasn't limited to her research and educational tours. Dr. Reynolds's civic involvement has been both deep and vast. Notably, she was instrumental in orchestrating the first Juneteenth celebration at the Vigo County Historical Society—a testament to her commitment to commemorating cultural milestones. Additionally, her advocacy resulted in a street in Vigo County being named after Cynthia Shepard Perry, a notable American diplomat with roots in the region.
Goode's praise for Dr. Reynolds underscores the appreciation for a historian whose work has illuminated the tapestry of Terre Haute's rich history. "I am honored to recognize Dr. Reynolds for her work and dedication to telling the stories that previously went overlooked," Goode said, highlighting just how deserving she is of such recognition for her tireless service to the community, detailed by Indiana Senate Republicans.
