Utah State University's new Musical Theatre program is making waves in the local theater scene, garnering accolades at this year's Utah Theatre Association Awards during the annual DramaCon, hosted by USU from Jan 23–25. Theatre Arts Department Head Richie Call and Head of Musical Theatre & Assistant Professor Vanessa Ballam received awards for their substantial contributions to Theatre Education in Utah, as reported by USU Today.

The event, a junction of educational insight and recognition, was spearheaded by USU Theatre students, faculty, and administrators, including Kelsey Koga, the production stage manager who ensured everything ran without a hitch. In a statement obtained by USU Today, Call expressed pride and nostalgia upon receiving the same honor that once graced his grandparents as educators in the state. USU’s "Between the Lines" production also received a special nod of appreciation from the Utah Theatre Association at the convention. Ballam, who initiated the proposal for the new program, is expected to have it navigate approval by the university, the State Board of Education, and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).

Ballam's envisioning of the program includes collaborations with the USU opera program and tailored music courses. Her recent move to USU, following a productive tenure at Idaho State University where she evolved the acting curriculum, comes as a homecoming of sorts. USU, a scenic campus that stands as a testament to the arts in Utah, welcomed over 1,500 high school students from across the state at the event, allowing them to firsthand experience the educational potential and community on offer.

The anticipation for the new Musical Theatre Program, expected to launch in fall 2026, lies in its harmonious blend with the music department. The program, designed to embody excellence and foster accessibility to the arts, follows the university’s land grant mission. Ballam's guiding experience and her familial connection to the arts in Logan, her father, Michael Ballam, founding general director of the Utah Festival, Opera and Musical Theatre and a USU music professor, has long championed the creation of such a program, according to USU Today. This generational torch now passed to Vanessa Ballam, aligns with an envisioned future where Logan's community breathes not only through academia but through the vibrant pulse of musical theater.
