Lafayette Parish drivers, take note: The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced significant interstate closures for the upcoming weekend. If you're planning on using I-10 or I-49, you'll want to carefully reroute, as DOTD crews buckle down on the final phases of the I-10 emergency girder repair project.
According to a DOTD announcement, on Saturday, from the early hours of 5 a.m. to the late hour of 5 p.m., I-49 northbound will be completely closed at the I-10 junction. The closure will facilitate the removal of formwork, and cleanup, of the I-10 eastbound overpass, a necessary step which, will see no traffic, including emergency vehicles, pass through that section during these hours. The following day will see I-10 eastbound reduced to a single lane between University Avenue Interchange and I-49 Interchange during the same time interval.
Detours have been laid out for affected motorists. Those on I-49 northbound should exit at 1A and continue east on I-10 to Exit 104, turn left on Louisiana Avenue, then jump back onto I-10 westbound to Exit 103B to rejoin I-49/US 167 toward Opelousas. Meanwhile, Sunday's lane closure on I-10 eastbound is coupled with ramp closures that include the I-10 eastbound overpass auxiliary lane and the I-49 northbound exit ramp from I-10.
The end is in sight for this infrastructure undertaking, with the project's completion slated for the close of this month, conditions willing. The emergency contractors selected for the design and construction phases hail from Lafayette, Huval & Associates, Inc., and C.E.C., Inc., respectively.
