The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that eastbound Interstate 10 will be completely shut down between State Route 51 and US 60. The closure will start at 10:00 p.m. on Friday and is expected to last until 4:00 a.m. on Monday. According to the ADOT, this move is necessary for orchestrating a traffic shift as part of the ongoing I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.
Several ramps will also be affected during these times. Motorists won't be able to access the eastbound I-10 from the southbound I-17, the westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway), southbound SR 51, and southbound SR 143 ramps. On-ramps at Jefferson Street and the HOV ramp to the eastbound Loop 202 will also be closed. The ADOT has outlined detours for drivers, suggesting the use of the eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to the southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway), then to westbound US 60, or the westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to rejoin eastbound I-10. In a statement obtained by AZDOT, officials advise drivers to steer clear of closures and follow designated detours.
Additional on-ramp closures span from Third and Seventh streets, Buckeye Road, and several more streets up to Broadway Road. These will be in effect from 8:00 p.m. Friday until the early hours of Monday. Detours not only support the flow of the heavy weekend traffic but also ensure the safety of construction teams diligently working to improve travel in the area. The Curve, a free mobile app dedicated to the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project or the official project website, comes highly recommended for those planning to head out, ensuring they have the latest on road conditions and closures.
The adjustments and roadway improvements are part of the broader I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, funded by the half-cent sales tax from Proposition 400 passed in 2004 by Maricopa County voters. The project is set to enhance the travel experience on I-10 during high-traffic hours, better airport access, support ridesharing and transit options, while preparing for the anticipated regional growth.
Travelers looking for alternate routes can consider taking the Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) as a bypass around the closure. By doing so, drivers from the West Valley aiming for the Southeast Valley can connect back with eastbound I-10 south of Chandler Blvd. For the most current information on closures and detours, ADOT encourages the use of their project-specific resources like TheCurve app and the Alerts section on their website.
