A Utah man has found himself facing the federal music after a botched bank heist, according to an indictment announced Thursday. Christopher Thomas Kirby, 37, from West Valley City, stands charged with attempted bank robbery following his arrest earlier this month. The charges stem from a March 19 incident at First Utah Bank, detailed in court documents obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice.

The story goes that Kirby, allegedly armed with nothing but a threatening note, approached a teller demanding $20,000. The note said, “this is a robbery I have a bomb on my [sic] that will explode I need 20,000 in bag,” a desperate plea that was cut short when the teller alerted authorities whilst pretending to fetch the cash. Officers responded quickly to the silent alarm, arriving to cuff Kirby, who waited unknowingly at the scene.

Prosecution of the case is in the hands of Assistant United States Attorney Carlos A. Esqueda, the Department of Justice also noted. Kirby, who made his first court appearance yesterday, will now have to answer to federal law at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City
