Acadiana residents are reeling from the tragic events that unfolded on the evening of Friday, as Louisiana State Police Troop I reported two separate fatal crashes within hours of each other. A statement from the Louisiana State Police detailed the circumstances that led to these fatalities.
The first incident, occurring shortly after 7:00 p.m., took place on Louisiana Highway 719 near Ridge Road in Lafayette Parish. 59-year-old Charlene Martin of Slidell lost her life, when the Hyundai Sonata she was a passenger in, was struck by a RAM 1500. The Hyundai, for reasons that remain unclear, failed to yield while attempting a left turn, resulting in the collision. Tragically, Martin was pronounced dead at the scene while both drivers sustained moderate injuries, despite proper restraint usage by all involved.
Investigative procedures followed protocol with toxicology samples being collected from the drivers for analysis, though impairment is not considered a factor at this time. The official release assures that a thorough investigation into the crash is ongoing to ascertain the specific details of the incident.
The second fatality occurred merely an hour later, involving a pedestrian on U.S. Highway 190 near Tasso Loop in St. Landry Parish. 47-year-old Andre Phoenix of Eunice, was struck by a 2006 Dodge 1500 while walking in the roadway. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a nearby hospital, Phoenix's injuries proved fatal.
The driver of the Dodge, not suspected of impairment, voluntarily submitted to a breath test, which indicated no alcohol in their system. Contrastingly, Phoenix underwent a toxicology test, the results of which are pending. As with the earlier incident, Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the exact cause of this tragic event.
