The desert can be a brutal, unforgiving place, but a story of companionship and survival emerged from Arizona's arid landscape this past week. Two dogs, Spike and Snickers, have returned to their family after a four-day ordeal in the wilderness, where, by all accounts, they never left each other's side.
As FOX 10 Phoenix reported, the pair of pooches embarked on an unscheduled adventure into the woods and were eventually spotted a mile and a half from the trailhead on the Black Canyon City Trail. The dogs' owner, Kathleen Paulson Wesley, turned to social media and traditional flyers in a desperate bid to find her beloved pets. "The worst thing is not knowing if they're hurt or if somebody took them," she said.
In an unforetold stroke of luck, the dogs were recognized by a hiker, Steve, who had previously seen a Facebook post about their disappearance and happened to be equipped for a rescue. He traveled half a mile with Spike, an 11-year-old yellow lab weighing nearly 100 pounds, in a rescue harness. According to 12News, assistance came from Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical for the final stretch of the trail, ensuring both dogs' safe return.
"Having both of them together, I'm sure it made it easier for them to locate water sources. There's a lot of dangers out there, surviving the elements and especially for that amount of time," Capt. Mike Snodgrass of Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical told FOX 10 Phoenix. He further suggested the ‘buddy system’ commonly advised for human hikers might have been crucial for the dogs' survival. Despite the ordeal, they were in relatively good shape post-rescue, though Spike has been recovering at a slower pace.
Relief washed over the Wesley family upon the return of their pets. "When I got the call at work, it was like my whole body just went into a sigh of relief. I just couldn't accept the fact that I would never see them again, and I'm so thankful to the people that helped us," Paulson Wesley mentioned in gratitude. From this incident, Capt. Snodgrass echoed the importance of microchipping pets and spotlighted the positive role that community and social media can play in such situations.
