An inmate at the Athens-Clarke County Jail passed away following a medical incident early Tuesday morning, as confirmed by the local sheriff's office; the man, 39 years of age, was discovered unresponsive during a check prior to the morning meal, as per the released accounts.
Officials from the sheriff’s department stated that at approximately 7:55 a.m., while performing their standard checks, jail employees encountered the man in a state that prompted immediate action, they began administering life-saving measures, and the call was placed to medical personnel, according to FOX 5 Atlanta; the urgency of the moment brought in Emergency Medical Services who sustained the resuscitation efforts on the way to a hospital nearby where the inmate was declared deceased just shy of 10 a.m.
The occurrence has led to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's involvement, enacting their usual protocol for such in-custody fatalities; this was included in a statement obtained by Atlanta News First.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the inmate who died at the Athens-Clarke County Jail, as they are still notifying next of kin. The cause of the medical emergency that led to the man's death remains unclear. Meanwhile, attention is turning to the results of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s (GBI) ongoing investigation, which may soon shed light on what happened.
