Authorities in Palm Beach County have detained a South Florida man after a violent incident involving his roommate's dog. Gabriel Martinez, 34, stands accused of animal cruelty for allegedly beating the canine with a metal trailer hitch. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office stated that the dog, named Gypsy, was found by its owner lying injured and whimpering at their Boca Raton residence. Surveillance footage captured Martinez attacking the pit bull for an extended duration, with a disturbing timestamp showing the incident to have lasted over four minutes, as reported by CBS12.
Upon reviewing the video evidence, deputies confirmed that the assailant cornered Gypsy against a fence before proceeding to brutally beat her with the hitch, a detail notably underscored by the metallic sound captured during the assault. During this cruelty, Martinez was heard shouting threats and profanities at the injured animal, asserting, "Once I get you you're dead," according to CBS 12. His sentiments chillingly carried over into one more declaration: "You f****** b****. You are going to get put down."
The aftermath of the attack was severe, with Gypsy suffering from a broken paw, multiple limb fractures, bone contusions, and abdominal bruising, as Local 10 reported. A veterinarian involved in Gypsy's care characterized the injuries as resulting from acute blunt force trauma. The depth of her suffering was such that she may face the loss of her limb. Despite this, Gypsy has been recovering at home under pain management medication after receiving urgent medical attention from Animal Care and Control.
As a result of the investigation, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has arrested Martinez on charges of aggravated animal cruelty. The trailer hitch used to inflict the harm has been seized as evidence in the ongoing case.
