A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy has been recognized for his swift, life-saving actions in the aftermath of a helicopter crash in Pompano Beach that claimed two lives. According to WSVN, Deputy Michell Machado, who was honored at a BSO award ceremony, rushed to the site of the crash after witnessing a BSO helicopter spiral out of control and into an apartment building on August 28, 2023. The body camera footage, shown for the first time during the ceremony, captured the explosive emergency that resulted in the death of BSO Fire Rescue Capt. Terryson Jackson and local resident Lurean Wheaton, however, Machado's efforts are credited with preventing further loss of life.
When recalling the incident, Machado stated, "It felt like a scene out of a movie. I would never think of a helicopter spinning out of control like that," as reported by WSVN. He described the smoke and chaos that unfolded as the helicopter crashed, prompting his immediate response. "When I observed aircraft spewing out black smoke," Machado recounted, before he raced toward the impact site, abandoning his motorcycle to aid those trapped by the wreckage.
NBC Miami's coverage of the incident includes additional bodycam footage where Machado can be heard urgently seeking to clear the building, shouting, "Everybody out! Is anybody home? Hello!" In an effort to reach victims, Machado shared, "As I left that apartment, I faintly heard cries for help." His attempt was thwarted when the apartment exploded, "pushed me back," Machado said in the intense video.
In an emotionally charged moment during the award ceremony, Machado remembered the explosion that not only took lives, but nearly claimed his own. "That’s when the apartment exploded and pushed me back," he told NBC Miami. Despite this harrowing experience, he proceeded to evacuate neighboring apartments to ensure the safety of as many residents as possible. The honor received reflects his bravery and commitment, though Machado humbly stated, "But at the end of the day, we were just doing our job."
The bodycam footage provided a visceral account of the incident and played a significant role in conveying the peril that both Machado, and those he helped, faced during the tragedy. Alongside Machado, the ceremony also recognized other deputies and employees for their acts of valor.
