A fatal shooting on Saturday evening in Chicago's West Loop has left one man dead and saw Blue Line trains come to a temporary halt. The violence erupted on a pedestrian bridge over the 400 block of South Peoria Street, near the CTA Blue Line's UIC-Halsted station. According to NBC Chicago, the confrontation involved a 61-year-old man and a 24-year-old man — the latter identified by police as a Chicago Transit Authority employee.
The situation began with what appeared to be a verbal disagreement between the two men but quickly escalated to involve gunfire. The 61-year-old suffered a head wound and was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. The younger man was taken into custody for questioning. A witness recounted hearing shots and subsequently seeing the CTA worker arrested and placed in a police car. Trains were back up and running again by Saturday night, with no further interruptions reported, although the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have immediately been filed.
"I heard about eight shots look out the window... guys shooting him," a local resident named Nate described the shocking situation to ABC7 Chicago. "I'm looking out here, and this man is shooting eight times, there's still people walking casually around, you gotta run for cover or something." More than 10 shell casings were reported to have been found at the scene.
The incident led the CTA to issue a statement advising passengers to consider alternative routes or take buses connecting to other rail lines while they worked to quickly restore service. "Blue Line trains are standing at UIC-Halsted due to police activity," the CTA explained, urging commuters to allow extra travel time. As service resumed, the grim reminder of the evening's events remained the talk of the neighborhood, with police maintaining a presence at the scene well into the night.
