The Lincoln Park community in Chicago was left reeling after a shooting on Wednesday night claimed the life of 28-year-old Kevin Patel. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Patel was shot around 9:20 p.m. outside his home on the 800 block of West Lill Avenue. Despite the efforts of residents to help him after he was found bleeding on the sidewalk, he succumbed to his injuries at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Garrett Moores, 29, a neighbor who attempted to aid Patel, recounted the harrowing moments as he tried to stabilize the victim. "I opened his jacket and he had a massive wound on the non-heart side of his chest," Moores said, as stated by the Chicago Sun-Times interview. Moores, along with other neighbors, were guided by the fire department over the phone to assist in Patel's breathing regulation. "He was blinking and looking at me and I was trying to get his breath under control ... I was telling him it was gonna be OK," Moores recalled.

In solidarity and concern, residents have recounted their experiences and commitments to stand together. One woman, who applied pressure to Patel's wound, emphasized the need for justice and the apprehension of those responsible. "It’ll be hard to feel safe in our neighborhood again until these people are found and justice is found for this family," she said in an interview obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

No arrests had been made as of Thursday afternoon, but Belmont Area detectives are investigating the case, as per CBS News Chicago.
