The Coconino County Board of Supervisors has given the green light to a comprehensive plan to upgrade Fort Tuthill County Park, streamlining a decade's worth of enhancements aimed at ramping up community engagement, sustainability efforts, and cultural enrichment. According to details disclosed by Coconino County Parks & Recreation, this forward-looking strategy encapsulates a slew of prospective developments.
This plan boldly charts out a design that includes the creation of a central plaza—dubbed the Heart of the Park—bedecked with Indigenous art and spaces for historical education, alongside the incorporation of amenities that are both modern and amenable to those with disabilities. Aspiring to not only improve but also to expand recreational opportunities, the plan introduces a plethora of new installations, such as a children's playground that takes its cues from the natural environment and additional facilities for pickleball enthusiasts.
Despite being contingent on the acquisition of future capital and the fluctuating desires of the public, the Master Plan stands as a testament to what might unfold within Fort Tuthill's expanses. The proposal doesn't skimp on infrastructure with environmental consciousness at its core, envisioning drainage improvements to facilitate all-year-round enjoyment of the park with minimal ecological impact. A special note of recognition was given to Coconino County leadership, along with local academics Dr. Fred Solop and Dr. Nancy Wonders of GlobaLocal Vision, the Wheat Design Group, and countless community members who all shared their insights throughout the planning process.
