The survey results seem to largely affirm the premise behind the initiative, with 75% of participants reporting an increase in financial security and a striking 94% using the funds to effectively manage a financial emergency or unexpected expense. However, these figures are not simply static indicators; they herald an ongoing impact, with 73% of participants believing the program's effects will continue resonating beyond its end. As reported by Fox32 Chicago, the income program did significantly more than just pay the bills—it lessened stress for 56% of the recipients and contributed to better mental health for 70% of them.
Essential living costs stood at the forefront of spending, with the top reported uses being food, rent, utilities, and transportation. This gives weight to the argument that a financial cushion might be essential, not discretionary, in the current economic landscape. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, in a statement obtained by Fox32 Chicago, said, "We launched the Promise Pilot to test a simple but powerful idea: that direct cash support helps residents live healthier, more stable lives."
One example comes from a program participant, Nikita Smith Jr., who detailed their experience to Fox32 Chicago: "Getting those checks was like I jump-started adulthood. For the first time, I could budget, fix my car, and take a job that was a better fit for me at the time. I even threw a birthday party for my son without sacrificing anything." Smith's voice adds a personal dimension to the statistics, illustrating how guaranteed income can tangibly alter the fabric of day-to-day life for individuals and families. As the program transitions to strategize coming steps, the advisory committee will be drawing together this Spring to chart a course that may extend these benefits to even broader horizons.
