The Deering Estate is launching its annual 'Contemporary Currents' series, featuring artists from its residency alumni. This year, Pangea Kali Virga, a 2023-2024 alumna, will showcase her exhibition, "To Be Dwellers With This Land," from May 1 to July 20 in The Garden Room of the Richmond Cottage at Deering Estate, according to a press release from Miami-Dade County.
Virga's eco-conscious textile art features silk-printed and embroidered imagery, created from upcycled materials. The exhibition promotes sustainable consumer practices, aligning with Virga’s zero-waste approach. The opening reception is scheduled for May 10, and tickets are available on Eventbrite.com.
Virga’s work includes a variety of art forms, from wall hangings and installations to fiber collages and large-scale gowns, all crafted from recycled materials. Her work blends art and environmental activism, with a focus on community engagement through workshops.
The Deering Estate, a historical landmark and cultural hub, is managed by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department. It serves as one of Miami-Dade County's Heritage Parks and plays a role in both cultural and ecological research.
