The sands of Delray Beach Municipal Beach continue their streak of excellence, securing the Blue Flag designation for a third consecutive year, an international mark of quality that recognizes the beach's adherence to rigorous environmental and safety standards. This distinction, which places the beach among an elite group of coastal areas worldwide, comes as a testament to the sustained efforts of the city's staff in maintaining its exceptional status. The announcement of this accolade was made in Delray Beach's official news release.
Beyond clean waters and well-managed coastlines, Blue Flag criteria span environmental education, services, safety, and even sustainable tourism—a benchmark that Delray Beach has not only achieved but also sustained over the years. The ceremonial raising of the Blue Flag, a symbol of the city's commitment to these standards, will occur at 10 a.m. on May 1 at the junction of Atlantic Avenue and A1A, near the flagpole. "We at the City of Delray Beach are incredibly proud to receive this prestigious international award again," Cynthia Bussion, Assistant Director of Delray Beach Public Works, conveyed in a statement obtained by the city's official website.
Founded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), headquartered in Copenhagen, the Blue Flag program requires participants to meet over 30 criteria in areas ranging from water quality to environmental management. However, in the United States, it was the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association that initiated the Blue Flag USA program during the National Coastal Conference in 2021. Delray Beach, as noted on its municipal website, had the distinction of being one of the first to be awarded in 2023, only to follow through with back-to-back successes in subsequent years.
Delray Beach, a community known for its vibrant diversity, has accumulated several impressive titles. Not simply content with having pristine beaches, the city has also been recognized on a national stage. USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards enshrined it as the #1 Best Beach in Florida in 2024 and with Atlantic Avenue being lauded as one of America's 10 Great Shopping Streets. Celebrated not only for its sunlit shores, Delray Beach also garners praise as an exemplary city, as indicated by its multiple All-America City awards and a top-five ranking for small businesses by Verizon Business.
In the words of Annie Mercer, program coordinator for ASBPA, "Congratulations on being awarded, for the third year in a row, the international Blue Flag to flyover Delray Beach Municipal Beach. Successful submission of an application in one year was a first for the program in 2023 and set the standard for new sites. National staff looks forward to continuing to support the City through the third season of the award," as noted by the same news release.
