Authorities in Chelsea have reported the arrest of a suspect in connection with an explosion earlier this month. Douglas MacMillan, a 40-year-old Dorchester resident, was detained after a coordinated investigation by Chelsea Police, in partnership with the Chelsea Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit. According to a social media post from the Chelsea Police Department, the incident in question occurred last Sunday at 1016 Revere Beach Parkway. MacMillan faces charges of possession of an incendiary device and malicious explosion.
The event was marked by a homemade explosive device being set off near a tree between apartment complexes. While the detonation caused significant alarm, there were fortunately no injuries. Chelsea’s Police Chief, Keith Houghton, lauded the swift collaboration between agencies, crediting their joint efforts in quickly apprehending MacMillan. "Their professionalism and rapid response ensured this individual was taken into custody swiftly," Houghton said, underscoring the importance of security ahead of local festivities, including the Boston Marathon and Chelsea's 250th celebration, as reported by the Chelsea Police Department.
Key figures in the investigation included Detective Thomas Broman of Chelsea Police and Captain Brian Capistran from the Chelsea Fire Department, among others from state agencies. The united effort pointed to the deliberate nature of the crime and expedited the process to bring MacMillan into custody yesterday, a mere two days post-incident. MacMillan's arraignment was scheduled for today at Chelsea District Court.
