A 26-year-old American man's attempt to smuggle methamphetamine across the border was thwarted by the vigilant efforts of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Ysleta international crossing in El Paso last Wednesday. In the early hours of March 30, the individual attempted to enter the U.S. as a pedestrian from Mexico, but his plan quickly unraveled thanks to a sharp-eyed officer and a drug-detecting canine, as reported by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection press release, it was the officer's keen observational skills that flagged the man for a secondary screening where the CBP drug sniffing dog gave positive indication for the scent of narcotics, which led to the discovery of the concealed drugs. Ysleta Port Director Arnie Gomez commended his team, saying, "Body carriers are a challenge however our mix of officer expertise, canine support, and tools and technology all assist us in identifying and stopping these types of smuggling attempts," his acknowledgment of the layered defense system in place at the border which utilizes both human skills and technological aids to detect illicit activities.
The man was examined again after arriving at the port around 4 a.m. A CBP officer found two packages of methamphetamine, weighing about one-third of a pound, hidden between his buttocks. This seizure is part of the ongoing efforts by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to stop drug smuggling, highlighting the constant challenges faced by border security.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents, who will oversee the progression of charges for 21 U.S. Code § 952 - importation of controlled substance; this is a clear indication of the severe consequences awaiting those caught attempting to breach U.S. law. The joint operation between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and HSI agents once again illustrates the collaborative efforts in maintaining the integrity of the nation's borders.
