Early this morning, a fire broke out in a fifth-story apartment at Marina Bay Apartments, located at 2610 Marina Bay Drive in Fort Lauderdale. The incident, reported just after 3:30 a.m., prompted a swift response from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. According to Local 10 News, approximately 40 firefighters from 16 units arrived to tackle the blaze, which consumed the balcony area of the unit and was visible from the I-95 highway.
Engulfed in flames, the balcony area was completely taken over by the fire, as observed in video footage. "Fort Lauderdale police officers from I-95 could see the flames burning from the highway, so we knew that we had a confirmed working fire," FLFR spokesman Frank Guzman said in a statement obtained by Local 10 News. It took firefighters just around 20 minutes to extinguish the flames. Amidst this emergency, a resident and one pet cat found themselves caught within the unit. The resident was able to evacuate, while the pet cat was rescued by firefighters and reported to be in good condition.
The fire, initially erupting on the apartment balcony, caused serious damage to the origin unit and left several neighboring apartments with smoke and water damage, as reported by NBC Miami. In the wake of the incident, dozens of residents were evacuated, but no injuries have been reported. The aftermath has led to several residents being displaced, with the American Red Cross stepping in to provide necessary assistance.
While detailing the fire's containment, a statement by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue on social media confirmed that while the blaze originally damaged one apartment, several other units suffered from smoke or water damage. Investigation efforts into the fire's cause are ongoing, yet it appears the incident started on a balcony.
The Red Cross has been notified to come out and assist residents, a number of whom will be temporarily displaced. The fire damage was contained to the one unit on the 5th floor, but several others saw smoke or water damage. pic.twitter.com/dsdsvjTpUN
