A tragic collision on Highway 204 in Union County last week claimed the life of a Hermiston man and left a North Powder resident with injuries, authorities said. The accident occurred on Thursday, April 10, when Mikel D Cribbs, 44, reportedly veered his Hyundai Sonata into oncoming traffic for undisclosed reasons, colliding head-on with an eastbound John Deere tractor driven by 42-year-old Santiago Ramirez Tapia. According to a report by the Oregon State Police, the impact caused significant damage to both vehicles, leading to the overturning of the tractor.
Cribbs was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ramirez Tapia was tended to for minor injuries before being transported to a local hospital. The highway remained closed for about four hours as investigators worked the scene, and various emergency teams, including the Union County Sheriff's Office, Elgin Rural Fire, La Grande Fire, and ODOT, provided assistance, as reported by the Oregon State Police.
The cause of Cribbs' sudden swerve into the opposite lane remains under investigation, as per the Oregon State Police. Traffic flow on Highway 204 returned to normal following the clearance of the wreckage and completion of the preliminary on-scene investigation.
