A Homestead school is grappling with a scandal after a P.E. teacher was arrested for alleged sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old student. Bryant Caniz-Segovia, 20, a teacher at Hope Academy, a K-12 private institution, is facing charges of lewd and lascivious battery on a child, as reported by NBC Miami.
Details emerged following the victim's conversation with Miami-Dade deputies, revealing a months-long illegal relationship that included, "consensual" sexual encounters and the exchange of nude photographs through social media, a Local 10 news article detailed. Caniz-Segovia engaged with the student multiple times from February to October 2024, although, by law the notion of consent is not applicable due to the child's age.
After a police interview where Caniz-Segovia was read his Miranda rights, he reportedly made some type of confession, according to arrest reports. Details of his confession, however, have been redacted in the public release. Caniz-Segovia, who resides in Miami, was subsequently arrested, and now faces two counts of his charges.
Currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Caniz-Segovia's bond has been set at $15,000.
