A housekeeper cleaning an Airbnb property in Fort Lauderdale became the victim of a brutal sexual assault, raising serious concerns about the safety standards of the popular vacation rental platform. The incident occurred on August 28, 2024, immediately after previous guests had checked out, as reported by WSVN. The worker, who chose to remain anonymous, detailed the harrowing experience, stating she unexpectedly faced violence while simply doing her job, listening to music and working in the home.
The unknown assailant reportedly broke in, pushing the woman to the ground with a knife and used zip ties to restrain her before proceeding with the sexual assault, detectives later said that the suspects from two prior incidents at the same address were ruled out, despite the fact it's unclear how the culprit entered the premises and whether there were prior signs of a security breach, the police and paramedics were called to the scene, the latter transporting the housekeeper to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.
Airbnb, the service that listed the property, responded to the incident by suspending it from their platform and issued a public statement, allegedly acquired by NBC Miami, stating, "We take the safety of our community seriously. We are investigating the incident reported and have suspended the listing from the platform during that time." This commitment, however, was called into question as this was not an isolated event, with two previous crime reports lodged against the same rental property; one incident involved the theft of a laptop and another where an intruder broke in and was found lying in the guest's bed.
The victim's lawsuit against Airbnb and the property's owners is grounded in the claim of their failure to provide adequate security measures to protect her and other workers; now she is seeking justice and urging the public's assistance to help identify the perpetrator. While no arrests have been made, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department continues their ongoing investigation.
