As April ushers in the inevitable scramble to meet tax deadlines, Indiana's Attorney General Todd Rokita, teaming up with local icon Sammy Terry, wants to lessen the sting a bit by reminding Hoosiers of money that might belong to them, currently sitting unclaimed. "Death can be painful, but paying your taxes doesn't have to be with a little extra cash in your pocket from Indiana Unclaimed," Sammy Terry told Indiana Attorney General in a not-so-ghoulish attempt to bring a bit of relief to taxpayers.
The reclaiming of forgotten funds is just a text away, by messaging "SAMMY" to 46220, the Attorney General's office is bridging the gap between the state and its citizens, reuniting them with their unclaimed wages, safety deposit box contents, overpayments and a raft of other assets that might've slipped through the cracks of everyday forgetfulness and Rokita emphasizes that "Hoosiers deserve what's rightfully theirs," whether it be money lost after someone's gone or simply oversight on part of the taxman, according to the Indiana Attorney General's statement he gave at the reminder event.
Notably unique to Indiana, the Attorney General's oversight of the Unclaimed Property Division ensures that these assets aren't forever lost in the state's coffers but instead find their way back to those who have rightful ownership. Holding onto physical items from dormant safety deposit boxes, like jewelry, for up to three years and allowing a substantial 25-year claim period for monetary assets according to Indiana Attorney General, Indiana is in a league of its own when it comes to property recovery.
For those concerned about the process, claiming what's yours is touted as being free, rapid, and secure plus given the current tax climate, Attorney General Rokita encourages residents not just to search for their own potential unclaimed property, but also on behalf of businesses, deceased relatives and anyone else who might have money waiting in the wings as the April tax deadline fuels a heightened awareness of one's financial dealings, the information and assistance needed is just a visit away at IndianaUnclaimed.gov or a call to the Unclaimed Property Division at 1-866-462-5246 or email to [email protected], where the staff are ready to ensure your legacy—and your wallet—remain intact.
