In a unanimous decision, the Indiana Senate has officially passed a resolution to commemorate a fallen Marine by renaming a Jay County bridge in his honor. According to a report from Indiana Senate Republicans, the resolution, introduced by State Sen. Travis Holdman, encourages the Indiana Department of Transportation to designate the bridge on State Road 67 over the Salamonie River as the "Lance Corporal Andrew Whitacre Memorial Bridge."
Lance Corporal Whitacre was not just any serviceman. His service included stints with the 2nd battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine division, I Marine Expeditionary Force in both Iraq and Afghanistan, killed in the line of duty during combat in 2008. The resolution, House Concurrent Resolution 9, passed the Senate on Monday, with full support, reflecting a deep respect for Whitacre's sacrifice. Serving with the 2nd battalion, the Indiana native was a key figure, embodying the spirit of both a Hoosier and an American, Holdman noted while presenting the resolution.
The measure seeks to offer a daily reminder of the dedication and heroism of those serving in the armed forces. "Lance Cpl. Whitacre embodied what it means to be a Hoosier and an American. He devoted his life to protecting the freedom of our country and all who live here," Holdman stated. "With this resolution, when we cross this bridge, we can celebrate the brave and selfless acts Lance Cpl. Whitacre and all members of our armed forces make every day. It was an honor to sponsor this resolution to memorialize a decorated service member from our community," as per the Indiana Senate Republicans.
The General Assembly's decision comes amid ongoing discussions on how best to honor fallen service members. The renamed bridge will serve as a permanent tribute in Whitacre's home county, but Holdman envisions it as more than just a local memorial. It symbolizes a connection between fallen heroes and the freedoms they've helped protect, honoring both the past and present contributions of the nation's military personnel.
